A pair of printed socks

First graders read the book A Pair of Socks, which was beautifully illustrated by Lois Ehlert. We discussed lots of smart ideas, like symmetry, line patterns and matching pairs.:

We read " A Pair of Socks" by Stuart J. Murphy. I brought in a bag full of fun socks. Each student pulled one sock out of the bag then looked to find their friend with the matching sock! Students designed some matching pairs of their own or found /colored matching pairs on a worksheet. Students traced a sock on cardboard. They then outlined the tracing with glue and glued down yarn. Students placed foam, cardboard, yarn, and other textures inside the yarn. We let them dry for a week. The next class, we discussed collographs, brayers, ink, and printing plates. Students printed their collagraph socks twice to make a matching pair. They then glued down the pair to construction paper and showed off their work!
